On one of the Madison-Jefferson County Public Library’s History Rescue pages regarding 1004 East First shows: “…in 1977 home of Louise Schwab-built in 1801-burned Jan. 10, 1977-Was a 5 room, 2 story bldg. Was in the Schwab family 150 years-Article in Mad. Cour. Jan. 11, 1977.”
I did not see a listing for them in any other census or online listings for that particular address on E. First with the name Schwab, but the maps do show a house there in 1854, 1887 and 1911. I suppose this is one of those I will have to look into more in paper records. (added 7-9-9**My neighbor just told me yesterday that he was related to Emma Louise Guerich Schwab who lived there and that he remembers being in the house before it suspiciously burned to the ground.)
More on this one at a later date, now that I know of someone who was in the house. I do have to wonder about any house, existing or not, in which the history says it was built before 1830.
There may be a mistake about the house being built in 1801. It could just be a misprint. For now I will file it under by gones until I get more information.
